With an amazing sharpness of depth, the French band Mediavolo, unroll the sequencers and the guitars into the last corner of their sound and give us a fantastic journey in the dimension of the Romantic-Wave. France, the country where love sometimes feels like a comedy, has not only Zidane, Joan of Arc and AIR, but also an innovative, sophisticated underground scene.
Géraldine Le Cocq and Jacques Henry are Mediavolo, and their album "A Secret Sound" is already their third work. With a lazy coolness and a pleasantly variable voice Géraldine through a circular dance of intoxicating enormous tracks, not dissimilar in character to the Cocteau Twins or Love Spirals Downwards. Their album sounds like a firm dwelling on which incessant rain falls. Something with dark carpets and dream rooms. One sits on the grand piano, somebody plays a guitar, a fairy-like appearance sings songs to it from a parallel world: wave pop can be so full of mood. Absolute highlights of the album are the earthy "Death and the City", the wavy "Misunderstanding" as well as the transcendentally floating "Mass Anaesthesia".
"A Secret Sound" also impresses through the fantastic artwork, which the French cult painter Obion, personally arranged. It strengthens the impression that Mediavolo send a bewitching message and without it's decoding it remains a mystery. In best 4AD tradition.
